They also form a foundation for literary theory.

Taube, Karl A. Aztec and Maya Myths. 1st University of Texas Press ed., University of Texas Press, 1997.
            Taube gives a detailed cultural and historical account of the Aztec and Maya civilizations. The book assesses significant symbolism and figures found in both mythologies while drawing parallels to their societal structure. Aztec and Maya historiography are examined against artifacts and physical sites. Ultimately, the depiction of modern Mexican and Guatemalan tradition proves the two civilizations to be gone but not forgotten.

            Torres’ lesson plan is devoted to the intricacies of Aztec deities and their cultural presence. Torres provides historical context, categorical myths, and extensive god/goddess profiles. Through this unit, Torres seeks to expands our knowledge of Aztec religion so that parallels to Mexican culture can be drawn. Ultimately, his objective is to depict the power of Aztec ideology over modern, Mexican identity. He regards literature and other forms of artistic expression as examples of this connection.
